Hardin Park, Cove Creek lead math tournament

by Staff Reports

The Hardin Park School team "Not Here Today" won first place out of 24 teams April 18 at the High Country Math Tournament.

The Cove Creek School Team No. 2 placed second, and third was the Balls Creek School "Number Ninjas" from Newton. Fourth place went to the Parkway School fifth grade team, and fifth place went to Parkway's sixth grade team after a tiebreaker with Hardin Park Team No. 2.

The event, held at ASU's Plemmons Student Union, pitted teams of up to five students in grades four through six against one another. The teams represented nine schools and home school groups at the all-day event.

The students had to solve 20 clever, engaging and challenging problems on a variety of mathematical topics. The event was hosted by the Hardin Park Math Club and supported by the Department of Mathematical Sciences at ASU.

Bryant Hou of Hardin Park was the outstanding individual for the day, scoring nine points in the individual round. Second and third were Kennedy Kelly and Naro Zarro from Balls Creek School.

The top 10 also included Blane St. Clair (home school), Lucy Rapfogel (Hardin Park), Lily Suyao (Blowing Rock), Ryan Catoe (Hardin Park), Jair Alvarez (Hardin Park), Thad Evans (Parkway) and Issac Styles (Cove Creek).

Honorable mention awards went to Oscar Verrico (Hardin Park), Brandon Holshouser (Parkway), Jimin Yu (Hardin Park), Ella Brown (Cove Creek), Anna Job (home school) and Annie Veno (Hardin Park).
