HCUW launches $575,000 campaign

Just a couple months after celebrating the achievement of their 2012-13 fundraising goal, High Country United Way supporters gathered Thursday to kick off another year of giving.
The organization set $575,000 as the goal for the 2013-14 campaign -- the same as last year's campaign, when HCUW reached its mark for the first time in seven years. Leaders have said fundraising has been challenged by the economic recession.
"We're going to do even better than that this year," said campaign co-chairman Tim Baxter, challenging the group of supporters gathered at Brookshire Park in Boone for the campaign kickoff. "We need your help to do it."
Joining Baxter as campaign co-chairwoman this year is Lori Gonzalez, who is in her third year as provost of Appalachian State University. Gonzalez, a Kentucky native, said she has enjoyed the chance to learn about Boone and the High Country and that she is glad to see local individuals take so much pride in their community.
Founded in 1978, High Country United Way funds programs in Watauga and Avery counties to help individuals and families achieve their human potential through education, income stability and healthy lives.
