First baby of 2012

Watauga County's first baby of 2012 was born at 3:47 p.m. Jan. 1 to parents Dana Powell and Eric Karchmer of Boone. The couple was still deciding on a name for the baby boy, who weighed 7 pounds, 4 ounces and was 19 inches long.
The family already includes a 2-year-old son, Isadore.
Certified nurse midwife Carrington Pertalion of Harmony Center for Women's Health and Vitality delivered the baby, and Lis McCachren assisted as a doula.
The baby is the second in his extended family to earn the designation of New Year's baby. Karchmer's sister was also the first-born in Weston, Mass. at her birth.
“We were surprised to be the New Year's baby as late as we were in the day,” Powell said.The first baby born here in 2011 didn't arrive until Jan. 2.
