Farmers' Market starts in May

by Lauren K. Ohnesorge

An $82,000 Farmers' Market Promotional Program Grant means good things are coming to the Watauga County Farmers' Market, new manager Tori Cox said.

Cox, who takes over for retiring manager Karen Bauman, accepted the position three weeks ago and has plans for the money.

“We're building a new website,” she said — a website with a new logo.

The Farmers' Market is in the process of hiring another employee to administer the grant. In the meantime, Cox, a Maryland native who has lived in the High Country for almost three years, is looking ahead to the first Saturday in May, when the Horn in the West Parking Lot will be bustling with market activity.

“Saturday mornings became my favorite part of the week when I moved here because of the farmers' market, so I've definitely been a long time customer and enthusiast,” she said.

Prior to her new job, Cox said she had been “homesteading.” Cox moved to the High Country for its recreation, and rock climbing in particular.

“I just fell in love with the beauty and the mountains here,” she said.

But don't expect major changes to the market itself, she said.

“It seems like customers and vendors want it to stay in the same location,” she said.

The market is currently accepting applications for booths. The board will review those applications next month and make its decisions.

The market has been in operation since 1974 in Boone.
