Cross-cultural tasting at Ag Center Saturday
Sample distinctive vegetable dishes and celebrate new community gardens in the area at a tasting and cooking demonstration from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Agricultural Conference Center in Boone.
The colorful, cross-cultural tasting will feature about 20 dishes prepared by Latino and Anglo cooks, with cooking demonstrations by both groups. The event is free, but donations to support the community gardens will be accepted.
Cooks will demonstrate ways to cook with tomatillos, how to prepare elote (roasted corn), fresh ways to prepare kale and methods for ratatouille.
The program is sponsored by Boone's new Granjeros Latinos (Latino Farmers) group, which is dedicated to community gardens and the local food movement. The group is a partner in a Heifer International grant administered by Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture. Other partners are the community garden at St. Luke's Episcopal Church and the new FARM Café garden in Valle Crucis.
The Agricultural Conference Center is located on Poplar Grove Road, one block above Southern States.
