Cash mob at Joe's Italian, Bare Essentials Saturday
by Staff Reports
The mob will gather first for lunch at Joe's Italian Kitchen (190 Boone Heights Dr., Boone) and then go shopping afterward at nearby Bare Essentials Natural Market (273 Boone Heights Dr., Boone). Participants are asked to gather at Joe’s Italian Kitchen between 11:30 a.m. and noon.
A cash mob is an organized infusion of economic stimulus into local businesses for the good of the whole community. The Watauga County cash mobs are sponsored by the local Democratic Party as part of a “buy local” movement nationally.
Joe Cafaro opened Joe’s Italian Kitchen in August 2001, offering homemade Italian dishes cooked from hundred-year-old recipes Joe learned from his mother while growing up in Brooklyn. Cafaro moved to Charlotte in 1980 and worked as a chef in several restaurants before coming to Boone. A specialty of Joe’s Italian Kitchen are the meatballs, handmade every morning.
Bare Essentials is the only locally owned organic foods market in Boone. Ben Henderson and Mary Underwood bought the business in 1988 and have expanded it to include “cruelty-free” body care products and high quality supplements. Bare Essentials will offer special bargains especially for the cash mob, along with free food and drink samples of natural products and a drawing for a special gift basket.
Past Watauga cash mobs have visited a variety of Watauga County businesses, including Blowing Rock’s Village Hardward, Papa Joe’s Restaurant, Appalachian Antique Mall, Mountain House Restaurant, David Miller’s Farm Supply and Hardware and the Hilltop Drive-In.
