Blowing Rock showcasing churches Thursday

In conjunction with "Arts Rock," a monthlong celebration of the arts in Blowing Rock, the town will showcase the art and architecture of its historic churches.

The event takes place on Thursday, Sept. 19, and includes self-guided tours, lunch and an old-time mountain sing-along.

Churches participating in the tour include First Baptist Church of Blowing Rock, Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church, St. Mary of the Hills Episcopal Church and Blowing Rock Methodist Church.

Self-guided tours begin at each of the four churches at 10 a.m. with a 20-minute narration allowing approximately 10 minutes to proceed to the next church.

Participants can choose their own time and starting point.

Maps are available at the Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce, located behind Blowing Rock Market. Special features of the tours include the antique Bibles and hymnals at First Baptist, the frescoes, murals and prayer shawls at Rumple Memorial, and the Elliott Daingerfield painting and Stations of the Cross at St. Mary of the Hills.

The self-guided tours take place from 10 a.m. to noon.  From 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., brown bag lunches will be available including sandwich, chips or pasta, dessert and beverage for $7 at Rumple Memorial. Lunch reservations may be made by calling (828) 295-7851. Use Rumple's lower level side entrance, across from the Blowing Rock Art and History Museum.

From 1:45 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Blowing Rock Police Chief Eric Brown will lead a group of musicians in a gospel concert and old-time music sing-along at Blowing Rock Methodist Church.
