Blood, Sweat & Gears shares the wealth
by Kellen Moore
Scott Nelson, president of BSG Events, presents a $50,000 check
to Rebecca Matherly of the American Red Cross chapter on Friday in Boone.
The donation comes from funds raised by the Blood, Sweat and Gears bike ride, which took place in June. The money will flow into two funds that assist with disaster relief in Watauga and Avery counties.
Nelson also distributed $7,500 to volunteer fire departments that assisted with the event.
Nelson said he is already four months into planning for the 2013 event. Organizers hope to add training rides, a vendor expo and a post-ride party to next year's event, he said.
An ASU study found that the 2010 ride brought about $892,000 into the local economy from out-of-town participants.
