Big Green Bus visits Boone
by Anna Oakes
The Big Green Bus, a project of Dartmouth College students now in its ninth year, visited Boone on Thursday, with events scheduled in conjunction with FARM Cafè.
The Big Green Bus is a Greyhound bus retrofitted to run on biodiesel and with many environmentally friendly features for vehicles and homes.
The bus and its crew travel the country each summer to host interactive events, sparking conversations about practical solutions to environmental issues. The crew also documents stories of sustainability to connect communities and inspire people to make sustainable life choices.
FARM Cafè is Boone's pay-what-you-can restaurant. The Big Green Bus crew volunteered at the cafè Thursday morning and then visited the FARM Cafè garden in Valle Crucis that afternoon.
Joanna Schneider, one of two general managers of the tour, said the examples set by the FARM Cafè are among the stories of sustainability the crew will share through video and the web. Schneider said that as college students, crew members don't feel they are in a place to tell others how to live; instead, the participants take on a listening role in hopes of starting a nationwide dialogue.
