Benefit dance set for ailing Boone veteran

by Staff Reports

A New Year's Eve dance fundraiser is planned in Blowing Rock to support ailing Boone resident Randy Keplar.

Keplar, a Navy veteran, has suffered several heart attacks this year that have required him to spend about 100 days in various hospitals, according to family friend Marion Miller, who is planning the fundraiser. In fact, Keplar is hoping to receive a heart transplant in the future.

The hospitalizations have required Keplar's family to stay in hotels in Johnson City, Tenn., and Nashville, Tenn., while he received care.

"Their expenses have been astronomical," Miller said.

The fundraiser dance will begin at 8 p.m. Monday at the American Legion Hall in Blowing Rock. George Wilson Band will provide the classic country music for line dancing and couple dancing, and guests are invited to bring finger food.

Admission is $10 for singles and $17 for couples.

Miller praised the strength and determination Keplar has shown through the ordeal.

"He just wont give up," Miller said. "He says prayer is the only thing's that kept him going this long."
