Beech hosts Totally 80s Retro Ski Weekend

Although out of style for almost three decades, those faded fashions take center stage during Beech's Totally 80s Retro Ski Weekend, taking place Thursday to Sunday, Feb. 20 to 23, atop Eastern America's highest town. Events include live '80s bands on Friday and Saturday nights, appearances by the Carolina Ghostbusters, a Totally Retro Apparel Contest, the inaugural Mile-High Moonwalk Contest and, of course, plenty of skiing and snowboarding -- most likely dressed in pastel.
Guests go back to the future beginning on Thursday, Feb. 20, with a retro karaoke night at Famous Fast Eddies. On Friday, Feb. 21, Mile-High Tavern keeps the party going with an all-retro show from rockers Buick MacKane. During MacKane's set break, attendees will have a chance to showcase their 80s dance moves with the inaugural Mile-High Moonwalk Contest, which carries a grand prize of $150.
The Breakfast Club, which bills itself as "America's favorite 1980s Tribute Band," plays the Beech Tree lodge on Saturday, Feb. 22, where attendees will show off rad garb for a $500 grand prize in the Totally Retro Apparel Contest.
The Carolina Ghostbusters, complete with their vintage Ectomobile, return for a second straight year to make appearances in town and the ski village.
"A year ago they came, they saw, they kicked it old school. So, we're quite pleased to have the Carolina Ghostbusters back again this February," said Amy Morrison of the Beech Mountain Tourism Development Authority.
Saturday also includes a banked slalom contest with an old school DJ.
Guests are encouraged to wear 80s ski garb while enjoying Beech's slopes all weekend. The weekend also features 80s-themed specials on lodging, meals and ski rentals throughout the town. For more information, call (800) 468-5506 or click to http://www.beechmtn.com.
