Beech Mountain youth sledding hill opens
by Staff Reports
Located adjacent to the town Visitors Center, the hill provides good sledding conditions with a combination of natural and manmade snow.
The sled run is operated by the Beech Mountain Parks & Recreation Department seven days a week, weather permitting, with safety personnel on duty.
A loudspeaker plays music, and food and hot chocolate is available at nearby restaurants. Parking is also available.
"There is no charge for sledding, and we get kids from all over the Southeast," said Amy Morrison of the Beech Mountain Tourism Development Authority. "Parents are welcome to call and check conditions. I'm able to provide real-time updates from my office window."
As eastern America's highest town at 5,506 feet elevation, Beech Mountain receives an average annual snowfall of 84.6 inches.
Plastic sleds are required. Guests may bring their own or rent or purchase sleds from nearby stores on the mountain.
The hill is open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends and holidays.For more information, visit http://www.beechmtn.com or call (800) 468-5506.
