13th annual Grown-Up Spelling Bee raised $1,000

by Frank Ruggiero

Can you spell "fundraising?"

The Boone Area Chamber of Commerce can, as its 13th annual Grown-Up Spelling Bee raised $1,000 for the Western Youth Network.

Held Tuesday at Watauga High School, the lexicological labor saw teams from area businesses and organizations compete to win the respect of their peers -- and an assortment of prizes.

Chetola Resort's Word Nerds, featuring Marcia Greene, Ruthie Nathan, Allison West and Kara Miller, took first, defeating Samaritan's Purse's Disaster Bee-lief Crew of Jennie Miller, Laurie Barbour, Susan Barlow and Debbie Henderson in wham-bang contest over "onomatopoeia."

Western Youth Network won the night, though, with the bee's registration and mulligan fees benefiting the local child and family advocacy organization.
