ABC RUMMAGE SALE: Boone United Methodist Church will sponsor its annual Attic, Basement, Closet rummage sale from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 24 and from 8 a.m. to noon May 25. There will be a silent auction today. Proceeds from the event will benefit local missions. The church is located at 471 New Market Blvd., off U.S. 421 East in Boone.


MUSIC IN THE PARK: Valle Crucis Community Park welcomes folk and rock trio Folk and Dagger to its Music in the Valle at 7 p.m. May 24. The concert is sponsored by Wren's Nest Landscaping. Admission is free, but a $5 donation to the park per person is recommended.


VIOLIN RECITAL: Maura Shawn Scanlin of Vilas will perform an end-of-the-year violin recital at 7 p.m. May 24 in the Recital Hall of the Broyhill Music Center, 813 Rivers St., on the ASU campus.

FUNDRAISER: A Gee Haw Show to benefit a 3-year-old battling tuberous sclerosis will be held May 25 at Cove Creek Elementary School on Vanderpool Road in Vilas. A country supper will be served from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The show starts at 6 p.m., with comedy, bluegrass, classic country and gospel music. The cost is $12 per person. Seating is limited. BENEFIT DANCE: A Habitat for Humanity Benefit Dance will be held May 25 at the Linville Land Harbor Recreation Center at 20 Land Harbor Plaza, Newland. The deejay will be Steve Coley. The line dance "Swamp Thang" will be taught from 7 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with the dance from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Admission is $6 per person. BENEFIT RIDE: A memorial motorcycle ride for Watauga County Deputy William Mast, who died in the line of duty, will be held on Saturday, May 25. Registration will take place from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Watauga High School. The cost is $20 for a single rider and $25 for a rider with a passenger. Funds raised from the ride will go toward a scholarship fund for rising seniors interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement or firefighting or as paramedic. After the ride, riders will enjoy barbecue from Big Mo's Barbecue, door prizes, a silent auction, a 50-50 drawing and live music from Blue Country. WILDCAT LAKE: located just past the Grandfather Home for Children campus on Hickory Nut Gap Road in Banner Elk, will open Saturday, May 25. "Come out and enjoy an afternoon of free hot dogs, drinks, games, swimming and family fun," said a spokesman for the recreation area. A lifeguard will be on duty from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.


WILDFLOWER HIKE: New River State Park in Ashe County will hold a spring wildflower hike at 1 p.m. May 25; meet at the Wagoner access contact station. Join a ranger to view and identify spring wildflowers. The group will hike a shaded one-mile nature trail, located at New River State Park's Wagoner access. Wear good walking shoes. COOKING DEMONSTRATIONS: A tasting featuring 20 vegetable dishes prepared by Latino and Ango cooks and how-to cooking demonstrations will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. May 25 at the Agricultural Conference Center on Poplar Grove road, Boone. It is sponsored by Boone's new "Granjeros Latinos" (Latino Farmers) group, which is dedicated to community gardens and the "local food" movement, and is a partner in a Heifer International grant administered by Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture. Blowing Rock Pool opens
Blowing Rock's Grover Robbins Swimming Pool opens for the season on Saturday, May 25. It will be open from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 7:30 p.m. on Sunday. The pool closes on Labor Day Monday, Sept. 2. Swimming lessons are available from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday. Adult lap swimming and exercise takes place from 5 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Season passes for Blowing Rock taxpayers are $70 for individuals, $90 for a family of four, $110 for a family of five, $120 for a family of six  and $130 for a family of seven. Monthly rates for Blowing Rock taxpayers are $50 for individuals, $70 for a family of four, $90 for a family of five, $100 for a family of six and $110 for a family of seven. Nontaxpayers should add $5 for all categories. Daily rates for taxpayers are $3 for children 12 and younger, $4 for persons 13 to 54, $3 for seniors 55 and older and $2 for all nonswimmers. Daily rates for nontaxpayers are $4 for children 12 and younger, $5 for persons 13 to 54, $4 for seniors 55 and older and $2 for all nonswimmers. NATURE HIKE: Mount Jefferson State Natural Area   in Ashe County will hold a nature hike at 2 p.m. May 26; meet at the picnic shelter. CONCERT: Mountain Home Music celebrates Memorial Day early with "Musical Memories: Memorial Day," a concert that will feature classic country music and patriotic songs. Music comes courtesy of David Johnson and the Studio Band. "In addition to country classics," said Joe Shannon, Mountain Home Music founder and host, " 'Musical Memories: Memorial Day' will also feature songs of remembrance and honor, songs dedicated to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country." The concert will take place May 26 at the Blowing Rock School Auditorium on Sunset Drive in downtown Blowing Rock. Starting time is 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door. Student tickets cost $10, and a children's tickets are $5.


CONCERT: The Watauga Community Band will perform its annual Memorial Day concert at 3 p.m. May 26. The concert will be held in Rosen Concert Hall at Appalachian State University's Hayes School of Music. The band, directed by Bill Winkler, will perform such patriotic pieces as Samuel Augustus Ward's "America the Beautiful," Leroy Anderson's "Bugler's Holiday" and the John Philip Sousa favorite, "The Stars and Stripes Forever." Also, the audience will be invited to sing along to the Jerry Brubaker arrangement, "The Ultimate Patriotic Sing-Along." Admission is free, and all are welcome to attend.

ST. JOHN'S CONCERT: St. John's Episcopal Church Summer Concert Season opener will feature the vocal and handbell choirs of Holy Cross Episcopal Church presenting "Sing'n in the Valle." CEREMONY: Appalachian State University will hold a Memorial Day ceremony at 7:30 a.m. May 27 at the Veterans' Memorial on the west side of the Dougherty Administration Building on campus. The ceremony will honor those who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. Activities include a flag-raising ceremony, followed by remarks by Lt. Col. David W. Cox, chairman of ASU's Department of Military Science and Leadership. A continental breakfast will be served in the administration building lobby following the ceremony. The public is invited to attend.


VETERANS SERVICE: U.S. military veterans, their families and supporters are invited to the annual Memorial Day ceremony in Blowing Rock. The event will be held in Blowing Rock Memorial Park on Main Street beginning at 11 a.m. on May 27. Veterans Ron Oberle (Navy) and Bill Parker (Marines) will speak of their experiences during the Korean and Vietnam wars. Chip Eidel will perform live music, and patriotic songs will be featured during a sing-along. The event is free.


MEMORIAL DAY: The seventh annual Boone Memorial Day Ceremony will be held from 10 a.m. to noon May 27 at the Boone Mall. The ceremony is a public event to show appreciation to all veterans who have served the country. It is sponsored by the High Country Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America.
 

COMMUNITY BAND: The Watauga Community Band will perform at Boone Mall for its annual Memorial Day military appreciation celebration. The concert takes place 10 to 11:30 a.m. May 27 at Boone Mall, located at 1180 Blowing Rock Road.


LIVE MUSIC: Neighborhood Yoga will host "Building Community through Music" from 7 to 8:30 p.m. May 27. Community members are invited to participate in the ancient practice of kirtan, a form of yogic chanting. The evening's kirtan will be led by Kristin Luna Ray.  No yoga experience is necessary, but Neighborhood Yoga founder Valerie Midgett encourages participants to "just come with an open mind and an open heart."  Tickets cost $12 at the door for general admission and $10 for students. BARBECUE FUNDRAISER: The Todd Ruritan Club will be hosting barbecue fundraisers the first Saturday of each month through October. SHRINERS PARADE: The Oasis Shriners return May 31 through June 2 to Blowing Rock for meetings, dinners, strategy sessions on raising money for their children's hospitals and a parade. The parade will feature clowns, go-carts, live music and more. It will wind down Main Street in Blowing Rock beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 1.


CHILDREN'S FUNDRAISER: Bridge Builders Inc. is hosting a fundraiser June 1 at the Crewette Building on Vandilla Street in Mountain City, Tenn. Proceeds will benefit the needy children of the Appalachian Mountain region. The fundraiser will feature a barbecue dinner with all the fixings, Shriner clowns, live music and an auction. DANCE SALUTE: High Country Dance Studio presents tribute to veterans fallen and living, titled "Operation Dance: We Salute You" on June 1. The tribute marks the dancers' end of the year show and will feature numerous dance acts, vocal numbers "and even a color guard to demonstrate our gratitude to all those who have served American in the military," organizer Amy Forrester said.  The show takes place at Lees-McRae College's Hayes Auditorium in Banner Elk. HORSE SHOW: The Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show Foundation and the Rotary Club of Blowing Rock will sponsor the 2013 Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show this summer. The saddlebred competition will take place at the L.M. Tate Horse Show Grounds at the Blowing Rock Equestrian Preserve June 6-9. Hunter-Jumper I takes place July 23-28 and Hunter-Jumper II takes place July 30-Aug. 4.

CIRCLE OF COURAGE: The children of Grandfather Home in Banner Elk invite the public to a Circle of Courage lunch and tour from noon to 1:30 p.m. June 7.  The event is for anyone who would like to learn more about the children and families that Grandfather Home serves. HORTICULTURE: The inaugural High Country Horticultural symposium will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 8 at ASU's Plemmons Student Union and at the Daniel Boone Native Gardens. The symposium, "Harnessing the Beauty ... Wildflowers and Native Plants," features four speakers and an opportunity to tour the Daniel Boone Native Gardens, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. The daylong event is designed to provide ideas from experts on plantings for landscaping gardens and homes. Registration is $70 a person. Registration includes a continental breakfast, catered lunch, parking and transportation and a walking tour of the gardens. Seating is limited to 100 participants. JUNE IN BLOOM: Blowing Rock will host a number of events for plant enthusiasts as part of its "June in Bloom" celebration. On Monday, June 10, the "Herbs for the Fun of It" luncheon and presentation will take place at the Green Park Inn with Pat Collins, president of the Blowing Rock Garden Club. The event starts at 10:30 a.m. and costs $25 per person. On Monday, June 17, the "Tea Leaves and Bloomers" event, a tea, talk and garden tour, will take place at the Gideon Ridge Inn. It starts at 2 p.m. and the cost is $20. On Tuesday, June 18, Roger Robertson, owner of The Last Straw, will present "Creating Designs for Outdoor Living" at his store on Main Street. The event takes place at 1 p.m. and the cost is $5. The "Hostas of Blowing Rock" brunch and home garden tour will meet at 9:45 a.m. at Timberlake's Restaurant at Chetola Resort on Monday, June 24. FUNDRAISING CONCERT: Violinist Gil Morgenstern and flutist Akal Dev Sharone will perform at 8 p.m. June 15 for a fundraising concert at the Temple of the High Country, which is located at 1043 King St., Boone. TRAIL WORK: Volunteer trail workdays at Grandfather Mountain State Park will be held each month through October. Times will be 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Join park rangers and help fix sections of the park. No experience or tools are needed. Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes (no flip flops or sandal style shoes are permitted) and bring work gloves (leather preferred), comfortable work clothes, snacks and beverage (nonalcoholic). SUMMER THEATER: Ensemble Stage Company has announced its schedule of summer theater events for 2013. The summer season opens with the funny and heartwarming "Searching for Eden," on stage June 15-23. BOWLING BENEFIT: The Relay For Life team, Joyce's Memory Walkers, will sponsor its 12th annual bowling event, Strike For Life, honoring Betty Hayes on June 23. There will be an entry fee of $25 per person, which covers two games of Scotch doubles, shoe rental, food and drinks. Squads may choose to bowl from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. or 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. There will also be a 50-50 drawing.
