SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Appalachian State men's track and field athlete Jake Goodchild was named the Southern Conference's Student-Athlete of the Week, Wednesday.

Goodchild, one of the most versatile athletes in the SoCon, notched a first-place showing in the decathlon at the 2012 Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships over the weekend to help lead the Mountaineers to their third-straight outdoor title.

The senior decathlete finished first in four of the 10 events that comprise the decathlon and finished 217 points ahead of his nearest competitor.

Goodchild finished the meet with 6,424 points over the two-day event and set a new school record in the decathlon discus throw (126-feet, nine inches) while tying his ASU record 21-8 in the long jump. He also set a new personal record in the pole vault (14-6 1/4), the second-best mark in Appalachian history.

In addition to his athletic performance, Goodchild has also excelled in the classroom where he maintains an impressive 3.33 grade-point average as an economics major.

He is the seventh Appalachian State student-athlete to win the award this season and the second from ASU's Track and Field program.
