Elon handles Appalachian State 82-59

ELON — Appalachian State lost its third straight game Monday when the Mountaineers fell 82-59 to Elon in front of 1,510 fans at Alumni Gym.

The Mountaineers (9-14, 5-8 SoCon) shot 66.7 percent from the field in the second half, but could not overcome a 39-23 halftime deficit. Elon (13-10, 8-4) never trailed after taking an 11-0 lead by the 16:20 mark of the first half. Elon led by as much as 19 points (35-16) in the first half, and never let the Mountaineers get closer than 12 the rest of the game.

The Phoenix, which is in first place in the North Division, outscored Appalachian State 26-8 on points off of turnovers. The Mountaineers turned the ball over 18 times, while Elon gave it back just eight times.

Elon, with help from 13 offensive rebounds, also held a 18-6 edge in second-chance points.

Nate Healy led the Mountaineers in scoring with 14 points. Mitch Woods and Petey Hausley both came off the bench to score eight points each.

Elon got 21 points from Sebastian Koch, who made 7-of-11 shots from the field. Drew Spradlin added 18 points, while Jack Isenbarger scored 11 and Ryley Beaumont scored 10.

Elon dished out 21 assists for the 28 basket the Phoenix made.

Appalachian State, which played its third game in five days Monday, plays at Furman Thursday. The Mountaineers return home Saturday to host Wofford in the first of a three-game homestand.

Appalachian State is in fourth place, four game behind the Phoenix and three games behind UNCG (9-15, 7-5 SoCon). Samford (9-14, 6-6) sits in third place of the division.
