LUBBOCK, Texas — Appalachian State shortstop Will Callaway is one of 50 shortstops nationwide on the initial watch list for the 2012 Brooks Wallace Award, the College Baseball Hall of Fame announced on Thursday.
The Wallace Award is presented annually to college baseball's top shortstop. The junior from Greenville, S.C. is the SoCon's only representative on the 50-member Wallace Award watch list.
Callaway, a top performer for one of college baseball's best offenses, has a .359 batting average, which is seventh in the Southern Conference. He's also hit 10 doubles, four home runs and 38 RBI.
Callaway ranks 29th nationally with 22 stolen bases and is among college baseball's top defensive shortstops. With 117 assists and 28 double plays, Callaway is an anchor of an Appalachian defense that leads the SoCon with a .972 team fielding percentage.
Callaway and the Mountaineers (32-10, 16-5 SoCon) host a three-game series versus UNC Greensboro this weekend. The series opener is set for 6 p.m. Friday at ASU's Smith Stadium.
