ASU women smother Western Carolina

Appalachian State's defense put the clamps down on Western Carolina, and pulled away from the Catamounts as a result.
The Mountaineers held Western to 14 second half points in a 58-39 victory in front of 311 fans at the Holmes Center. Western Carolina turned the ball over 29 times, 19 of them being Appalachian State steals. Kelsey Sharkey grabbed six of those steals in 19 minutes work, but the Mountaineers scored just 26 points off them.
Appalachian State was particularly tough on Western Carolina in the second half. The Catamounts made just 4-of-22 from the field (18.2 percent), but three of those baskets were 3-pointers.
Western didn't get any help from the foul line either by making 6-of-12 for the game.
Appalachian State didn't exactly prove to be an offensive juggernaut. The Mountaineers connected on just 7-of-25 shots from the floor (28 percent) in the second half, and made just 2-of-13 from 3-point range for the game.
Anna Freeman led ASU with 16 points. Freshman Maryah Sydnor added 11 points and Michelle Taylor scored seven. Taylor also dished out four of the Mountaineers 13 assists.
None of the Catamounts reached double figures in scoring. Diamond Hunnicut and Rena Wakama each scored eight points for Western Carolina.
