ASU women blast Wofford in second half
by Steve Behr Sports Editor
Appalachian State's first victory over Wofford this season was a one-point cliffhanger that ASU was fortunate to survive.
The Mountaineers did not need any good fortune in their 75-46 thumping of Wofford at the Holmes Center Wednesday night. Appalachian State, winners of eight straight, stayed in first place of the Southern Conference by outscoring the Terriers 20-4 at the start of the second half to take a 57-29 lead that was never in jeopardy.
“Wow, I didn't know we did that,” Mountaineers forward Kelsey Sharkey said.
Appalachian State (19-3, 13-1 SoCon) held a 35-27 halftime lead on Wofford (11-13, 4-11) after getting off to a slow start. The Mountaineers put their defensive pressure on overdrive, which led to 28 points off 30 Wofford turnovers.
Appalachian State also used 19 offensive rebounds to score 15 points, and outscored Wofford in fast break points 12-2. The Mountaineers also dished out 22 assists on 33 made baskets, allowing them to shoot 56.7 percent from the field in the second half and 50.8 percent for the game.
It was a sharp contrast to the 59-58 victory Appalachian State scratched out against the Terriers in Spartanburg, S.C. Wofford missed three shots in the final seconds of the game to allow the Mountaineers to survive.
Sharkey finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Anna Freeman, the leading scorer in the SoCon, led all scorers Wednesday with 16 points.
Courtney Freeman added 11 points and a game-high eight rebounds, while point guard T.C. Weldon added 10 points and four assists.
Wofford was limited to 35.2 percent shooting for the game, including 32.1 percent (9-of-28) in the second half. Mariah Masalin and Daniella Motley each scored eight points to lead the Terriers.
Appalachian State hosts UNC Greensboro Saturday in a doubleheader with the men's team. The men, who host Wofford, start at 2 p.m. with the women following at 4 p.m.
The Mountaineers will be raising money to fight breast cancer.
