Behind offense provided by Allie Cashion and Meghan Smith, Appalachian State's softball team Mountaineers downed UNCG, 6-2 to advance in the winner's bracket of the 2012 Softball Championship at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium Thursday.
The Mountaineers (22-23) fell behind 1-0 when UNCG's Heather Robb blasted a solo home run in the bottom of the second to left field, giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead. The Mountaineers started a rally with a Cashion single.
Meghan Smith scored when Cashion advanced to third on a Spartan throwing error. Freshman Riley Carter's sacrifice bunt scored Cashion, giving the Mountaineers a 2-1 lead.
UNC Greensboro tied the game 2-2, but Cashion gave Appalachian State a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning when her double drove in Smith. Caroline Rogers drove in two more runs with a single to put the Mountaineers in front 5-2.
Rogers scored an unearned run in the sixth. She and Cashion each had two hits for the Mountaineers. Carter picked up the win for the Mountaineers on the mound in relief of starter Caitlin Wainwright. Carter did not allow a run and struck out two batters in 4 2/3 innings of relief work.
Appalachian State faces top-seeded Georgia Southern at 7 tonight. UNC Greensboro plays Samford at 2 p.m. today.
