ASU men beat Samford in double overtime

Appalachian State men’s basketball team kept its chances for a bye in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament alive with a 70-67 victory over Samford in double overtime Saturday in front of 838 fans at the Holmes Center.

With he game tied at 61-61, Appalachian State outscored the Bulldogs 9-6 in the second overtime. Jamaal Trice, who led the Mountaineers in scoring with 18 points off the bench, started the run with a 3-point basket to give the Mountaineers a 64-61 lead.

Appalachian State pushed its lead to five points two times, the final being 70-65 on a Nathan Healy layup with 2:36 left in the period. Samford’s Raijon Kelly answered with a 3-pointer with 2:18 left, but neither team scored the rest of the game.

Appalachian State can clinch a bye in the first round of the tournament with a victory over Chattanooga Saturday at the Holmes Center. The bye in the tournament is important since it allows the team that has one to play just three games in the tournament instead of four.

No team has ever won the tournament without the bye. South Division champion Davidson, South runner up College of Charleston and North Division champion Elon have the other three byes.

Tevin Baskin added 10 points for the Mountaineers, while both Jay Canty, Mike Neal and Micahel Obacha each scored nine. The Mountaineers shot 42.4 percent from the field, and dished out 14 assists in making 25 shots.

Samford got 22 points from Tyler Hood, who also had seven rebounds. Tim Milliams added 12 points and Connor Miller 11 points. The Bulldogs made 45.9 percent of their shots, but just 27.3 percent in the overtime periods.
